WIC Prescreening Tool available online
Posted 09/09/11
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service is pleased to announce the online availability of the WIC Prescreening Tool.  The WIC Prescreening Tool is a web-based application intended to help potential WIC applicants determine if they are likely to be eligible for WIC benefits.  The Tool asks users to complete a series of questions regarding their categorical, residential and income eligibility for WIC benefits.  Based on their responses to these questions, users are informed that they "may be eligible" or "may not be eligible for WIC benefits.

Users who are likely to be eligible to receive WIC benefits are provided with State-specific contact information and are encouraged to make a certification appointment with their WIC local agencies.  Additionally, users are provided with a printable summary of their responses and a list of examples of the documentation that is required at an initial certification appointment.

The Tool is currently available in English, Spanish and Chinese (traditional).  More languages are expected to be added in the near future.

WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Study Final Implementation Report
June 2010
The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) undertook the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counseling study to understand both the way that breastfeeding peer counseling grants are being used, and their impact on breastfeeding among WIC participants. It will ultimately provide a comprehensive and systematic picture of the implementation and impact of the Loving Support Peer Counseling program. This initial report, which looked at grants provided in FY 2007 and 2009, focuses on implementation, describing the process by which States implemented the Loving Support model, and how funds are being used. It also describes general characteristics and operational issues in a sample of local WIC agencies implementing the program, and explores five agencies in more depth through local case studies.  A second study, on the impact of an enhancement of the Loving Support Peer Counseling Program on breastfeeding outcomes for WIC participants, is underway.
