Balancing Calories

  • Enjoy your food, but eat less.
  • Avoid oversized portions.

    Foods to Increase

  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
  • Make at least half your grains whole grains.
  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.

    Foods to Reduce

  • Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals -    and choose the foods with lower numbers.
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

    MyPlate Resources

    Team Nutrition is making the MyPlate materials and graphics available for download, as they become available. Educators may continue to use the MyPyramid materials and resources for their nutrition education efforts until revised materials are made available.

    MyPlate is a new generation icon with the intent to prompt consumers to think about building a healthy plate at meal times and to seek more information to from www.ChooseMyPlate.gov. The new MyPlate icon emphasizes the fruit, vegetable, grains, protein and dairy food groups.

    In an effort to create cohesion among federal agencies and promote positive nutrition behaviors to consumers, the communications initiative will support the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans with consumer relevant themes and easy-to-understand, action-oriented messages.

    • Getting Started with MyPlate - This is an explanation of the key MyPlate resources currently available.

    • 10 Tips Nutrition Education Series - The 10 Tips Nutrition Education Series provides consumers and professionals with easy-to-follow tips in a convenient, printable format. Educators can use these to support existing lessons and consumers can choose one or more of these tips sheets to start making small changes toward healthier eating. This resource is available online as a PDF and print copies will be available in the near future.

    • MyPlate Graphics - USDA encourages the use of the MyPlate icon in a variety of applications, including textbooks and other educational materials. Any educator or consumer interested in using the image should refer to the MyPlate Graphic Standards for all appropriate use information.

    • Choose MyPlate Poster - The MyPlate poster has the "new generation" food icon to prompt children and parents to think differently about their food choices.

    • Let's Eat for the Health of It - This consumer friendly publication is based on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans with the MyPlate logo.
